High School Hatchery Tour & Fish Dissection

Duration: 1.5 - 2 hours
Ages: Grades 8 - 12
Location: Rivers Heritage Center and Allco Fish Hatchery
Cost: $3.00/student
Availability: Fall and Spring

The High School Hatchery Tour & Fish Dissection includes an in-depth tour of the Allco Fish Hatchery with information about the Alouette Watershed, the life cycle of the salmon, and habitat requirements for salmon and trout.  Fall viewing and activities include: fish fence operations, brood stock incubation, spawning salmon, egg collection and fertilization, as well as salmon dissections. Spring viewing and activities include: egg incubation, fish rearing, fish feeding and fish release.
 

Outreach Programs

Students participate in hands-on habitat enhancement and protection projects.  Adopt a nearby stream or green space and participate in yearlong activities.  Activities offered this year include:

  • Stormdrain marking
  • Water quality monitoring
  • Bird box placement
  • Vegetation planting
  • Stream cleanups
  • Invasive removal
  • Aquatic invertebrate monitoring
